“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33

Christians’ Inconsistent View of Debt

When it comes to many of the so-called Christian financial counselors of the 21st century, it always amazes me that they can be so inconsistent in their theology. Do these people ever actually read their Bibles? Imagine if our pastors preached about other sins the way many of these ministries talk about debt.

“There’s good pornography and bad pornography!”

“You have to be wise when you commit adultery!”

“God cautions us against murder!”

“If you absolutely have to steal something, make sure you do it quickly!”

Someone would yank the pastor away from the altar and send him to get his head examined if he tried to preach one of those messages. Yet when it comes to financial debt, we eat it up. It tickles our ears and makes us think we’re in God’s will, even though we’re in far over our heads.

The Bible clearly calls debt sin every time it’s referenced. Yet we excuse that sin in our lives because we are a covetous people. The idea that there is good debt and bad debt is completely out of step with every teaching of God. If God is perfect and His Word is sufficient for all things, would He be contradictory in any area? Is there any area of Scripture that contradicts another?

Christian, if you’re giving the Bible lip service by saying it’s the perfect will of God, and yet you have a contradictory or inconsistent view of your finances, examine yourself! If it’s contradictory, if it doesn’t apply to all people, it’s not of God! God is perfect and His Word is perfect. It doesn’t have mistakes or inconsistencies in it. We have become conformed to the world’s way of thinking about money in America. If you can’t afford to pay for something, you need to pray about it. Maybe it’s not God’s will for you to have it.
