Trading Morals for Dollars in a Recession

I wanted to offer a biblical response to Trading Morals for Dollars in a Recession by Jennifer Saranow.  It’s a great topic for us all to consider as we sell our stuff in order to eliminate debt and/or relocate.  It’s especially important to consider for those of you “crazies” out there who saved your money over the last several years to buy your home with cash, and no mortgage (count us in as one of those crazies).  Or, perhaps you’re the buyers covered in the article. You’re In Debt Because You Listened to False Prophets

You’re in debt because you  listened to false prophets like the ones in this video.  Whether these are the false prophets on radio who tell you that it’s fine to get into debt because it’s the “American Way”, the false prophets in public schools who taught you that you need to go into debt for college or you’ll be a nobody, or the false prophets you watch on television every morning, teaching you how to swindle God out of money if you just have enough faith. Should Student Loans Be Forgiven?

The Associated Press is reporting the following regarding student loans: “Starting this week, anyone with a federal student loan can apply for a program, run by the Department of Education, that caps monthly payments based on income, and forgives remaining balances after 25 years. Those choosing to work in public service could have their loans forgiven after just 10 years.” Read the full article here.

As Christians, we must always look to the Bible to determine right and wrong. Let’s do that as we think about this story.  Forgiveness is a biblical virtue.  So is forgiving loans. Upon first glance then, it seems like this forgiveness program is a great thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Preparing for an Economic Storm

The book of Proverbs tells us “The prudent man forseeth the evil, and hideth himself:  but the simple pass on, and are punished.” (Prov. 22:3, 27:12)

The American economy is souring fast, and it appears that every American household is about to get hit with an enormous tax bill, if the cap and trade legislation passes in the Senate and becomes law.  Early estimates from some lawmakers said the tax would cost every American household $175 per year.  Read the rest of this entry »

Biblical Ethics: Relocating With No Job

It’s summer time and many of you want to relocate to another state or another part of your state.  Perhaps you want to labor in a ministry somewhere, take care of an aging parent, or attend a faithful church.  However, jobs are much harder to find these days.   You really want to leave, but there’s no job.  So what do you do?  Well, as in every situation, you task is to apply biblical ethics (applying the Word of God/His commandments  to make decisions), by studying the Word and praying.

Here are three verses to study: Read the rest of this entry »

The “S” Word

When did the word “sin” become such a horrible word in the Christian community?   You rarely hear the word anymore. Today, we’ve replaced sin with words like “wrong”, “mistake”, “bad”, “foolish”, and “unwise.”  People mentally contort themselves to say anything but the word sin.  Yet, that’s what God calls our thoughts, behaviors, and words that break His commandments.  Christians need to be encouraged in these hard times to preach the Gospel the way we are commanded to.  We should never be afraid to proclaim “thus saith the Lord. ” Go ahead and use the  “S” word.

“And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.” (Acts 10: 42-43)

What  synonyms do you hear for the word “sin,” when “sin” should be used?

Yes, Christians Today Still Have to Tithe

Christians today are still required to tithe.   God does not set aside the command to tithe in the New Testament.  In fact, Christ affirms the practice of tithing in the New Testament in these verses:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (Matthew 23:23) Read the rest of this entry »

The 3% Giving Challenge

Did you know that historically churches would set aside 3% of their monies to give to widows and orphans?  When you’re in debt, the thought of any form of giving may seem burdensome. It can be hard just trying to survive in today’s economy.   All you can do is pay your tithes.  There’s just no more room to give.

We stress alot on this blog God’s commandments to not borrow.  We also want to stress God’s commandments to give.  Remember,

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. ” (James 1:27) Read the rest of this entry »

Should Christians Consolidate Loans?

Should Christians consolidate loans?  Crown Financial Ministries says that “consolidation can make sense”.  The article goes on to state,  ” a consolidation loan can be a smart idea, if the person consolidating does not borrow more than what is actually needed to pay the outstanding bills.”  Note that while the article contains Bible verses, none of the verses address or support the issue of whether a Christian should consolidate their loans.
