“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33

Should Student Loans Be Forgiven?

The Associated Press is reporting the following regarding student loans: “Starting this week, anyone with a federal student loan can apply for a program, run by the Department of Education, that caps monthly payments based on income, and forgives remaining balances after 25 years. Those choosing to work in public service could have their loans forgiven after just 10 years.” Read the full article here.

As Christians, we must always look to the Bible to determine right and wrong. Let’s do that as we think about this story.  Forgiveness is a biblical virtue.  So is forgiving loans. Upon first glance then, it seems like this forgiveness program is a great thing.

However, there are two commandments being violated here:

“Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.” (Proverbs 20:10)

You can’t offer one group of people forgiveness after 25 years, and another group forgiveness after 10 years. This unequal treatment violates this commandment.  God takes this very seriously. He destroyed nations in the Bible  for this very thing.

“Thou shalt not steal.”

Who will be paying for the loan forgiveness?  If I have student loans, wouldn’t you, my neighbor be paying for my loans to be forgiven?  Did you volunteer for that?  No.  You’re being robbed.

I’m sure there are other verses to consider. Please share your thoughts by leaving your comments below.

I think it is so funny how the government is in debt. The people, not knowing any better because of the government’s example, are in debt too. Yet the gov’t doesn’t take priority when it comes to eliminating their debt because they create money out of thin air. Then they create programs like this. It is all pretty screwed up if you ask me.

I hope that the people that qualify for this forgiveness have to go through some sort of hardship claim in order to receive the benefits of forgiveness. And that its not just being offered to anyone. The cap makes sense based upon their earnings though. But should also be re-evaluated periodically based upon an increase in earnings as well.
